VOSA goes online on the road

VOSA - Vehicle and Operator Services Agency - is launching a new Mobile Compliance Device (MCD) to improve its targeting of vehicles and operators at the roadside.

The MCD is a robust handheld computer which will enable inspectors to search and extract information from VOSA databases at the roadside. Information includes operator and vehicle details, technical records, test expiry dates and current prohibition notices.

VOSA Enforcement Officers will also be able to use the device to record any details and information gained when they stop a vehicle. The details will be sent via a wireless GPRS connection to a central database, and be immediately avaialbel to other officers.

The device can also download digital tachograph data from the drivers smart card and vehicle unit to allowing officers to analyse and enforce drivers’ hours regulations. In addition, it will validate the driver smart card by accessing a central repository of driver card information held by DVLA using its GPRS facility.

The application will also allow VOSA examiners to administer the graduated deposit and fixed penalty Notices at the roadside, once they are approved by Parliament and implemented.

National roll out of the MCDs, one for each VOSA enforcement officer, will soon be completed.
