Joburg depot for Unic Spider Mini Cranes

The Unic Spider Mini Cranes division of South Africa’s B&B Group has officially opened its new location in Edenvale, Johannesburg.

The company is based in Empangeni, north of Durban on the east coast, while the new premises are aimed at improving the company’s sales, rental and service coverage in the Johannesburg/Pretoria region in order to meet a growing demand for spider and mini crawler cranes across South Africa. Sean Marais has been appointed as depot manager.

As part of its expansion the company has also taken delivery of its first 10 tonne Unic URW-1006 spider crane, currently the manufacturer’s largest crane. In addition to the Unic crane, the division also offers a range of vacuum equipment/attachments for handling glass and large panels. The company is also considering adding further new locations, particularly in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

B&B Group founder and chief executive Bob Fogg said: “Over the last few years we have seen an increase in the use of these spider mini cranes in a number of different environments. We formed the division in 2006 and have mainly been growing by word of mouth. Customers who have used our cranes often contact us when they have to perform a difficult lift, or they need to lift something that conventional cranes cannot complete due to space restrictions and access problems on site”.

“Since then these cranes have been used for a number of niche projects in the South African market, from work in gold mines to replacing large water valves in a processing plant and lift a large fish tank down from the mezzanine level into the atrium at the Cresta Mall. We believe that the growing demand highlights the versatility and cost-effectiveness of this type of crane.”
