Fatal crane overturn

A tractor based articulated pick & carry crane left the road and rolled down an embankment landing on and crushing two young girls near Ramban in Jammu and Kashmir, northern India yesterday.

The two girls, Sunita Devi, 5, and Laxhmi Devi, 10, were standing alongside the Jammu to Srinagar highway number NH44, when the operator – who works for a road contractor - appears to have lost control of the crane which then rolled down the bank onto the girls. The youngest died at the scene, which the older girl passed away shortly after arriving at the local hospital. The operator has been arrested.
