Shitbox derby for charity

Skyjack Australia’s Jason Cranmer and Casey Law of Qld Access will shortly head off into the outback – well almost - in their $1,000 scrapheap of a van travelling 3,614km from Melbourne to Townsville via Birdsville.

The team is responsible for the cost of the vehicle – maximum cost $1,000 – and making it as reliable as possible to cover the terrain and make it through to the end. The aim is to raise $2 million for Cancer research from the 250 odd teams participating. The Skyjack/Qld teams has so far received pledges totalling $78,000 so we can all help make that $100k or more. The two protagonists purchased a Mitsubishi L300 Van earlier this year with more than 450,000km on the clock.

They gave it a new lick of blue paint and have covered it in sponsors decals, along with a life size picture of a scissor lift, while a platform has been added to the roof. One assumes that they have also paid careful attention to the running gear of course, and not just the aesthetics. They set off on the seven day trip on October 19th and naturally will be aiming to arrive in Townsville in one piece.
