Second LHM 600 for Cape Canaveral

Port Canaveral in Florida has purchased a second Liebherr LHM 600 High Reach mobile harbour crane. The first LHM 600 arrived in 2019 and was, at the time, the largest such crane in North America.

The new crane can lift up to 154 tonnes on its 61 metre boom and can lift to a height of 49 metres, providing a 20 container reach and cope with containers stacked nine high on deck, significantly better than the 2019 model which has a 58 metre boom.
The Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved the $7.4 million cost of the new crane in August, assisted by a $2.8 million grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. The new crane is expected to arrive next December. The ports says that the current LHM 600 has already lifted a record number of boosters for the adjoining Cape Canaveral NASA space centre, while it is also facing growing shipments of other heavy cargo.

The new crane will benefit from a major update with numerous improvements and enhancements, including partial automation systems made possible by a more sophisticated crane control system, evolved sensor integration and digital information transfer.
The operators cab has also been redesigned, with an innovative coupling of joystick and armrest to help improve comfort and provide more precise, safer operation, along with a new integrated touch panel interface for the selection of all crane functions. A revised air-conditioning system helps ensure that fogged windows are quickly dehumidified, particularly given the humid climate.

Port chief executive John Murray said: “We’re pleased to add this major acquisition to our port to better meet the demands of an expanding portfolio of diverse cargo. We are projecting the pace of growth in cargo handling to be very significant over the coming year. This crane will provide greater lift capability that will also meet the needs of the developing commercial space enterprise in our region.”
