Phill Ross

He began his career in 1991 as a civil engineering apprentices with Anglian Water Services, where he eventually became a site engineer. In 2005 he moved to contractor Alfred McAlpine as quality, environment, and health & safety manager and stayed with the business when it was acquired by Carillion in 2008. He moved up through the expanded business to become senior integrated management system manager, and in 2012 transferred to Carillion Construction Services as head of quality, adding the health & safety remit to his responsibilities the following year. In 2016 he took up a similar role at Connect Plus Services which operates and maintains the M25 motorway network around London, leaving for Balfour Beatty five years later.

Ross said: “I’ve always had an interest in construction as I enjoy design and problem solving. I recall early in my career there was an incident on site, I remember thinking how can you go to work and get hurt, just going to work and not getting home safely does not compute for me. My main motivation has always been to make sure people get home at the end of every day. Decades later, I never tire of celebrating safety milestones.”

“It’s been an exciting few weeks, but it’s crucial that I walk in the shoes of as many people as quickly as possible. I have already passed my IPAF PAL 3 a/b and can now operate boom and scissor lifts, this learning experience is so valuable when you are embracing new challenges. Nationwide Platforms has made huge strides with innovations like Harness On, I am really excited to see all the innovations we will continue to bring to market.”

Paul Rankin, chief executive of Nationwide added: “Your safety, our priority", is the motto we live by every day at Nationwide Platforms and Phill encapsulates that to its fullest. His dedication to fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance aligns seamlessly with our commitment to the well-being of our employees, and we are confident that our safety initiatives will thrive under his direction.”
