New Liebherr L series self-erectors

Liebherr has launched upgraded versions of its L1-24 and L1-32 self-erecting tower cranes. The changes included substantial redesign of the structural elements, an improved hydraulic system and new modular drive system. Other changes include new crane control and operating systems, a modern telematics and remote assistance system and a move towards greater component commonality between models.

The jib lengths remain unchanged: 25 or 27 metres for the 25 L with jib tip capacities of 950kg and 800kg respectively, and 30 metres for the 33 L with a jib capacity of 1,050kg. They also use the same ballast and transport axle options.

To differentiate the new models from their predecessors, the nomenclature has changed, and now reflects the maximum load moment, turning them into the 25 L and 33 L - being 25 and 33 metre/tonnes respectively. The new cranes also adopt a new standardised radio remote controller, which will be used in all-new Liebherr bottom slewing cranes. This is intended to also make it easier to switch between the L and K series, reducing the amount of training required.
The new models adopt a new standardised fifth generation radio remote controller

These cranes become the first of their type to feature the fifth generation of Liebherr’s in-house control hardware, ‘Liebherr Control 5’. The system is already installed on new excavators, dumpers, deep foundation equipment, mobile harbour cranes, and wheel loaders.
In terms of software, the cranes are fitted with the second generation of the Tower Crane OS (Tower Crane Operating System 2), which features a new user interface, which top slewing tower cranes from the EC-B series began using in 2021. The All L series models are also equipped with the Sway Control assistance system to dampen down load sway from sudden movements, the system detects movements in the direction of slewing and trolley travel that can cause loads to sway.

The intelligent load sway damping system actively counteracts and corrects such movements. This can be particularly helpful for inexperienced users or those who only occasionally operate a crane. They also include ‘Micromove’, which enables and ultra precise control function when placing a load into its final position.
The cranes retain the jib lengths and transport options of the L1-24 and L1-32

Product manager Clemens Maier said: “The L series marks the start of a new development generation and sets the standard for future products. Nothing has changed in terms of the cranes’ compact dimensions and powerful performance. The new Liebherr control system provides us with new, innovative crane operator assistance systems and is optimally designed for current and future requirements.”
