Lorry loader cranes to receive new interlock systems

Ongoing dialogue between the HSE, major manufacturers and the European Standing Committee (Working Group) on the Machinery Directive, has lead to an agreement that adequately designed interlocks need to be developed for new lorry loader cranes as a matter of urgency.

Manufacturers have agreed to undertake the development of ‘suitable and reliable’ interlock systems, or an equivalent alternative, ready for commercial application to all new lorry loader cranes by 2006.

The HSE has stated that only when the devices are sufficiently advanced and available will it propose a revision to EN12999 European Standard for cranes and loader cranes.

The HSE has meanwhile warned that additions to existing machines should only be employed under full approval of the manufacturer.
