Konecranes to build in US

Finish maritime and industrial crane manufacturer Konecranes says that it is establishing a network of US based supply partners including structural steel fabrication providers, in order to allow it to build port handling cranes in the United States “sometime in the coming years.” The long term plan was initiated in response to the US government’s 25 percent tariff on Chinese built cranes announced in May.

Konecranes expects the network to be based in states such as Ohio, Virginia and has already received initial indications of interest from a number of customers looking for Build America, Buy America (BABA) cranes including STS – Ship To Shore - cranes. Given that STS cranes take several years to produce and deliver, the company does not see any short term impact from this initiative.
Konecranes says that it also has the capability to modernise existing port cranes with the latest technology and cybersecurity standards, as part of an ongoing drive to improve the safety, productivity and sustainability of its customers’ operations. As a result of these plans the company has been listed in statement/fact sheet issued by the White House yesterday.

Konecranes has operated in the US for several decades and has three crane manufacturing facilities in the country with around 2,200 employees and over 60 sales and service branches across the country., serving a range of customers including privately run ports, intermodal operators and port authorities, as well as industrial companies.
