Fatal crane incident

Two men died while another four were injured, two seriously, on Thursday after two mobile cranes overturned in the port of Gijón in Asturias on Spain’s north coast.

The two five axle cranes were in the process of dismantling a mobile harbour crane owned and operated by port operator Ership Alvargonzález, part of the Ership group. We understand that the cranes had been rented by the contractor employed to dismantle the crane - Astur Manzana.

The cranes were carrying out a tandem lift of the harbour crane superstructure when something happened, one photograph suggests that the dockside might have given way under one of the crane’s outriggers. The load /crane superstructure landed up in the sea, while one of the All Terrains partially tipped and the other ended up completely on its side. The crane that partially overturned came from the Roxu rental fleet.

The two men that lost their lives were aged 24 and 49 and were employed by Montajes Astur Manzana.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crane collapse, while emergency services and local officials are continuing their response efforts.

We will update if and when we learn more.
