A bigger articulated boom

XCMG unveiled a new articulated boom lift at Vertikal Days last week, the XGA48K which just tops the long term record holder- the JLG 1500AJP.
The new XCMG XGA48K

The new XGA48K has exactly the same lift mechanism as the JLG - a three section telescopic riser, topped by a three section telescopic boom and a 2.54 metre jib with 131 degrees of articulation, unlike the JLG the XCMG jib does not rotate.

The maximum working height is 48.7 metres, just 600mm more than the JLG, although it does offer an extra metre of working outreach at 24.5 metres at an up & over height of 18.9 metres. Maximum platform capacity is 460kg, with an unrestricted capacity of 300kg.
So how des it compare with the JLG

Dimensions
When it comes to this size of machine, size matters, the new XCMG is dimensionally quite similar to the JLG 1500 with an overall width of just under 2.5 metres stowed, opening to a working width of just over five metres. For transport the new boom has an overall height of 3.2 metres with an overall length wiht the jib tucked under and to the side of just over 12 metres and a total weight of 27.4 tonnes. The overall length without the jib tucked is almost 15 metres

The hydraulics, drive motors and tanks

Four wheel drive and four wheel steer with oscillating axle are standard, with power coming from an EU Stage V Cummins diesel.

Vertikal Comment

It is hard to see that this unit offers much product differentiation to the aging JLG 1500, but it may well have more up to date technology and componentry and at the very least offers an alternative, which might just stimulate a slow product sector. And given that the only current offering is a JLG with no competitor it will almost certainly be less costly, even with a tariff. It will be interesting to watch.
