25 years of Liebherr's RTG

Liebherr is marking the 25th anniversary of the launch of Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane production at its facility in Killarney, Ireland.

The product line has evolved from early dual powered models - combining gensets with cable reeling drums - to today's fully electric and hybrid versions. Current models incorporate energy capture and storage systems, allowing for smaller diesel gensets.

The RTG range includes various automation features, from basic additions such as automatic steering and destination control to full and semi-automatic operation options. The company has also developed remote operation capabilities.

Today, the company's RTG design features an eight rope reeving system for anti-sway performance in both trolley and gantry travel directions, along with a single hoist drum configuration for improved compactness and maintenance access.

Engineering managing director Charlie McCarthy said: "Sustainability and innovation have been at the core of the Liebherr RTG's success over the past 25 years. By delivering precision engineered solutions that meet the needs of our customers, we have established a legacy of excellence."

Declan O'Sullivan, sales managing director added: "Meeting and exceeding customer expectations has always been our priority. The Liebherr RTG's journey to date reflects our commitment to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of our customers."

“As the Liebherr RTG turns 25, we celebrate not only its legacy, but also its future. Sustainability, innovation, along with trustworthiness and responsibility will remain the cornerstones of our success for the next 25 years and beyond."
