Dutch offshore crane manufacturer Huisman has launched Rope Vision, an automated visual inspection tool designed to keep a check on wire rope conditon on heavy duty cranes.
The system integrates visual scans with crane controlled usage data and wire rope condition to predict remaining rope lifetime. By analysing lay length, diameter, broken wires and protrusions, it provides an ISO 4309 based severity rating. This approach aims to extend rope lifespan and reduce unforeseen downtime through predictive maintenance. It also simplifies and improves inspection quality.

The system features four cameras providing a 360 degree view, with a scan speed of 45 metres a minute. It is suitable for 50 to 72 millimetre diameter wire ropes.
Huisman director of services Martijn Reissenweber said: “Rope Vision represents a significant step forward in how we manage wire rope integrity. This is more than just a new tool, it is a strategic shift in how we leverage automating inspections and intelligent data analysis. Instead of reacting to wear and tear, we offer the possibility to schedule maintenance proactively.”
