Third LPS 550 for PD Ports

UK port and logistics company PD Ports has taken delivery of its third 144 tonne Liebherr LPS 550 electric rail-mounted port crane.

The crane has a maximum capacity of 144 tonnes with a 48 metre boom capable of handling around 1,200 tonnes an hour. It features Liebherr’s hydrostatic and electric main drive, with a diesel engine for backup during power outages. Its four rope grab system enhances material flow, while storm anchors and robust structural design ensure stability in challenging weather. The new crane will be mostly employed on bulk work at Teesport, joining two other LPS 550’s that were delivered in 2023.

PD Ports business director Grant Honzik said: “This latest investment is about building resilience and capacity into our bulk operations at Teesport for the long term. The performance and reliability of the existing Liebherr cranes has been proven day in, day out, and adding a third LPS 550 gives us greater flexibility on the berth and more headroom during peak demand.”

Liebherr UK maritime & port equipment manager, David Vaughan, added: “We have been working in partnership with PD Ports since the delivery of its first unit in 2023. To see the repeated trust in our products and services continue to expand has been great. It’s excellent to hear such positive feedback on the reliable uptime and performance of the previous units.”

Based in Middlesbrough, the PD Port employs 1,500 running port and logistics services, cargo handling, shipping, warehousing, rail and other maritime services from 11 locations in the UK - from Teesport and Hartlepool in the North to Thames and the Isle of Wight in the South.
