Hire Safe adds cranes

UK rental company Hire Safe Solutions has announced the launch of a crane and lifting division alongside its existing powered access operations.

The new division will include mobile self-erecting tower cranes, All Terrains, spider cranes. Its existing 360 degree telehandler fleet will also join the new division.

The first crane will be an eight tonne Liebherr MK140 mobile self-erecting tower crane, due to arrive next week. The company says that it will also offer a full contract lifting service, including lift planning and project management.

The company added: “We are incredibly proud to announce the launch of our dedicated lifting division, expanding our capabilities to provide our clients with a complete lifting and powered access solution.”

Based in Leamington Spa, in the UK’s Midlands, Hire Safe Solutions was established in 2013 by Gerard & Rebecca Jennings. Today, the company runs a fleet of well over 2,000 aerial work platforms, with a strong focus on larger boom and scissor lifts.

Vertikal Comment

This is a surprising and slightly puzzling move from Hire Safe Solutions. While the aerial lift rental market in the UK might be challenging at the moment, it is nothing compared to the crane rental market.

The business has always been tougher, with a fair few companies in it for the passion and prepared to tolerate minimal returns. Yet it is hugely capital intensive, while requiring reliable, experienced staff, including operators, lift planners and supervisors, as well as a really good dispatcher/ hire desk clerk.

They are not the first, though. German company Gerken did the same thing at the start of 2024, and seems to have done quite well - or rather, they have not given up, See: Gerken moves into crane rental - but the German crane rental market is a tad more disciplined than the UK, at least when it comes to rates and range.

Perhaps the addition of cranes to the fleet is aimed at supporting one or two major accounts? We will follow up with the company and look to provide an update in the near future.
