Italian rental company NMG Italia has transported a 2.8 tonne Jekko SPX328 spider crane by helicopter for the construction of a mountain hut in the Puex-Odle Nature park, northern Italy, roughly 2,050 metres above sea level.

The project required the crane to be fully dismantled and prepared for air transport, then flown to the refuge in four individual parts - weighing no more than one tonne each - before being reassembled in reverse order following a mirrored sequence: first the battery, then the stabilisers and finally the telescopic boom.

Stefano Vecchiato, NMG project manager said: “Finding the optimal solution for this specific case was the cornerstone of the project. We chose the SPX328 because it is compact, agile and designed for quick disassembly into lightweight components that can be transported by helicopter or light vehicles.”

“To keep helicopter usage time to a minimum and reduce logistics costs, as well as on-site working time, we carefully planned the crane’s disassembly procedure, component balancing and subsequent reassembly at altitude.”
