Administration for Nationwide Hire

We can finally confirm that UK rental company Nationwide Hire – trading as Nationwide Hire Solutions has now appointed administrators, having filed an intention to do so a week or more ago.

We approached the directors and main shareholder Mark Burton over a week ago and again more recently, but so far the company has not responded.

We can also confirm that the joint administrators Mark Thornton and Kiri Holland of BDO have sold the company to Alliance Hire Solutions, which was set up in June. It is owned by Alliance Tool Hire and its directors - Charles Skinner, John Laycock, Mark Rousell, Beth Peters, along with Margaret and David Jones. Alliance had revenues for the year to June 2025 of £12.8 million with a pre-tax profit of £429.000. It also owns Avon Tools Hire.

A statement from the administrators said: “Mark Thornton and Kiri Holland of BDO were appointed joint administrators of the Company on 28 July 2026. Immediately following their appointment, the Company's business and certain assets were sold to Alliance Hire Solutions Limited.

“A letter from the joint administrators will be issued to all known creditors in the coming days. This will provide further information regarding the Administration and explain the process for submitting a claim.”

Nationwide Hire dates back to 1995 when Lynda and Howard Piper established Nationwide Tool Hire. They adopted the current name in 2006, and is based in Fareham, Hampshire. In late 2019, it was acquired by Project Kestrel Bidco.

Nationwide’s latest accounts for the year to September 2024 show revenues of almost £11.1 million with a pre-tax loss of £1 million, a tangible net worth of £ 3.9 million and positive working capital. Although reports of late or non payment had been growing over the past year or so, according to industry credit rating companies.

Nationwide Hire was owned by Project Kestel Bidco, which had losses of £7.7 million for the year to September 2024 on the same revenues as its subsidiary. It, in turn, is owned by Maxarlo Ltd, which is owned by Mark Burton, who has been a director of Nationwide Hire since 2023.
