XCMG’s 14,000t ringer

Chinese construction equipment manufacturer XCMG has unveiled the first part of what it claims will be the world’s first 14,000 tonne ring mounted crane.

The new crane, a joint development with Sinopec Heavy Lifting & Transportation, will comprise two 7,000 tonne crane modules that connect to each other and lift in tandem, but can also be used on their own as a two 7,000 tonners.

The first crane ‘module’ completed its final assembly stage in Xuzhou on Friday, which a big introduction ceremony and will now go on test, while the other half of the tandem crane is being completed. When both units are integrated, the crane will have a maximum load moment of 700,000 tonne/metres.

A detailed specification has yet to be published, so detailed information, including boom lengths, configurations and load charts. So, running a full report or comparison is not yet possible.
The new crane does have an electric direct drive system for the winches and slewing functions etc, which the manufacturer says delivers substantial energy savings of more than 30 percent, helping reduce fuel costs and emissions.

The new tandem crane is aimed at nuclear power projects, as well as work in more conventional energy and wind power projects. For conventional energy applications, the new crane can lift a range of large towers and vessels as complete units, reducing risks in assembly, pressure testing and other installation work.

In nuclear power construction, it can handle the largest loads from a single position, while for offshore wind, its lift height and capacity enable the installation of larger turbines.
