Potain has delivered the first unit of its new 40 tonne MDT 1609s, the largest flat top tower crane in its range, to German precast concrete manufacturer Karl Bachl Betonwerke, which has installed at its facility in Bavaria.

The crane has a maximum capacity of 40 tonnes and can be rigged with an 80 metre jib, with a jib tip capacity of up to 14.1 tonnes. it also features Potain's Crane Control System and the Potain Connect telematics system, which allows remote diagnosis and maintenance. An energy storage system recovers energy as loads are lowered and stores it for reuse.

At Karl Bachl Betonwerke's site in Bavaria, the crane has been erected to a height of 40.2 metres, lifting materials in the storage yard, including precast concrete segments weighing nearly 40 tonnes. It was installed on the circular mast left in place by the site's previous tower crane, using an adapter designed by Potain dealer Moser Baumaschinen and Manitowoc's Lift Solutions team.
Manitowoc's lift solutions manager Bernard Ecabert said: "For the MDT 1609, we required all our engineering know how and close cooperation with Moser Baumaschinen, with whom we've worked for over 30 years as a Potain dealer. The Potain MDT 1609 is the first in an exciting new line of Maxi-MDT cranes."
Karl Bachl Betonwerke is the concrete products division of the Bachl Group, a family owned building materials and construction company founded in 1926 as a brickworks at Deching, near Röhrnbach in Lower Bavaria. It now produces insulation, plastics, building elements and concrete products, and carries out construction work ranging from industrial and commercial building to road construction, with production and sales operations in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania and Croatia.
