Sterling relaunches ST440 trailer

UK based truck bed manufacturer Sterling has relaunched its ST440 step frame trailer. The company displayed one of the first models to come off the production line since 2021 at Vertikal Days last week.

The three axle ST440 was originally manufactured between 2018 and 2021, when production was halted due to Covid. Sterling then shifted its investment towards other products, including concrete mixers, but customer demand - the company says - has now returned the trailer to the production line.

It has been developed specifically for transporting aerial work platforms, and in particular large numbers of small scissor lifts with a maximum load capacity of 25.5 tonnes and an overall length of 13.6 metres. Features include remote control of the 3.2 metre double-flip ramps and the winch, 34 pairs of lashing rings along the sides and centre, two one metre storage toolboxes, and LED lighting all around.

The company also showcased its Miniload beavertail truck body, which was launched last year. It is available in 7.2 to 14 tonne configurations with internal deck lengths from five to seven metres. The beavertail body uses high beam crossmembers threaded through the body runners at nominal 300mm centres to spread point loads, with 220mm hardwood decking on the main body and steel mesh on the ramps, while 3.5 tonne lashing rings run along the side rail at 900mm intervals and in recessed chain trays at the front. Standard equipment includes a folded 1.5 or 1.6 metre headboard with tapered sides and integrated chain lock bars, fixed work lights, a 3.6 tonne electric winch, a one metre plastic toolbox and rear corner beacons.

Sterling manufactures from a 40,000 square foot facility on a five acre site at Stokesley, North Yorkshire, employing 70 people and carrying out much of the production in house, including laser cutting, folding and painting.
