Fatal fall

A man died on Tuesday following a fall while working at height at an industrial unit in Shropshire, UK.

The incident occurred at the Grocontinental logistics warehouse in Whitchurch, Shropshire. Emergency services were unable to help the man, who worked for a building maintenance contractor carrying out work on the site, he was declared dead at the scene.

An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive.

Linda Grocott, joint managing director of Grocontinental, issued a statement which said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the construction worker who died while working for a building maintenance contractor at our headquarters in Whitchurch. We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and all those who knew him.”

At this point we have no further details nor do we have any idea what work at height equipment the man or the contractor was using.

The contractors are understood to have been putting the final touches to a £2.25 million extension to the Grocontinental facility.

UPDATE
We can now confirm that the man, Paul Suthon, was in his 40s and fell from an aerial work platform. We believe it was a boom lift and have to assume that any harness he was wearing was not attached.

Comments

initial reports say the man was using a cherry picker to lag pipe work when he fell out of the basket. It is believed he was wearing a harness but was not clipped on.
