Alan Michael Hemmings 1944 - 2021
We have received the sad news that UK crane and access industry veteran Alan Hemmings passed away on 4th of April, after a long battle with cancer. He was 76.
Hemmings spent the final 18 years of his career with Hull based Peter Hird & Son, and was managing director from 2009 until he retired at the end of December 2011 - see:

He was also a very active member of the Access Link, the association of privately owned regional rental companies, and a past chairman of the Lincolnshire and Humber branch of the Lighthouse Club construction industry charity. He continued to support the charity long after he had retired.
He began his working life with an apprenticeship at the Scunthorpe steelworks, later joined the British Army and became a corporal in the East Anglian Brigade serving in Cyprus, Germany, Malta and Northern Ireland. He left the Army in 1966 and eventually found the crane industry joining Scott Greenham and then entering the powered access industry, joining PTP in 1993.

Hemmings was a keen pilot and at one time owned his own small aircraft and once revealed that he had at least two crash landings during his flying career. He lived his life on the basis that you should “live life to the full and have no regrets”. He leaves behind his wife Ann, children Yvonne, Dawn, and Richard, along with four grandchildren.
He requested that rather than flowers people donated to one of the following charities:

I appreciate knowing of Allan posthumously, especially Mr. Bower’s story about Niftylift folks wearing helmets and white flying scarves. I own a 2003 Niftylift TM40 and I’ll tie a white scarf to the basket rail in Allan’s honor. My condolences to Ann and children. RIP Mr. Hemmings.

It is with great sadness that I have learnt of Alan’s passing.
Alan worked with me at Scott Greenham and then at PTP as part of BET.
Above all he was a really nice, genuine lad who was extremely conscientious and meticulous in his attention to his work. He was also very ‘polished’ and distinguished in his appearance and image which in many ways was unusual in the hire sector in those days. This clearly reflected his services background and he put it to good use when dealing with customers and staff who clearly respected Alan.

I had the privilege of working alongside Alan as Access Link neighbours for quite a while. What a lovely gentleman he was, even putting other people’s interests ahead of his own. I remember his last Link meeting, kindly hosted by Niftylift, where he was called out of the meeting on a false call. When he came back in all the Link members including Niftylift staff had donned pilot’s helmets and white scarves.
He was missed.
