Final send-off for Hemmings
Allan Hemmings, retiring managing director of Peter Hird & Son has completed his final work day on Friday with a large send–off on Friday evening attended by all of Hird’s employees.
Now aged a very youthful 67, Hemmings handed over to Philip Hird after 18 years with the company, having joined from PTP Platforms in 1993.
Hird said: Allan has played a major role in the business from day one, helping us to expand our powered access fleet to the strength we have today. It has been an honour for everyone at Hirds to have worked with him and he will be greatly missed. We would like to wish him all the best for his retirement along with a Big thank you for the commitment and service he has offered us over the years. I am looking forward to taking over the day-to-day running of the business and hope that I can follow in the footsteps of Allan.”
Vertikal Comment
Hemmings has been a very popular member of the UK access industry, playing a significant role at both Hirds and in the Access Link of which Hird is a member. He was given a very special send off at the last Link meeting

It is with great sadness that I have learnt of Alan’s passing.
Alan worked with me at Scott Greenham and then at PTP as part of BET.
Above all he was a really nice genuine lad who was extremely conscientious and meticulous in his attention to his work. He was also very ‘polished’ and distinguished in his appearance and image which in many ways was unusual in the hire sector in those days. This clearly reflected his services background and he put it to good use when dealing with customers and staff who clearly respected Alan.
I send my sincere condolences to Ann and family.
