Crane tips in Ontario

A Rough Terrain crane overturned yesterday while lifting boat at the Collins Bay Marina in Kingston Ontario.

The crane a 65 ton Link Belt was placing the boat into a winter storage cradle and as it slewed around over what looks like a retracted outrigger the crane slowly tipped. The operator Henry Fierz started to lower the boat, but was unable to do it fast enough to stop the crane’s booms coming down on top of the boat and two others.

The failed outrigger is fully retracted

Fierz was badly shaken but uninjured and no others were harmed in the incident. A local policeman said that the outrigger ‘gave out’. The photographs that we have been sent are not good enough to see, although it is clear that the beam is fully retracted, whether this happened after the crane tipped only those there when it happened know.
