Access in Ukraine
A reader in Kiev Ukraine has sent us photographs of a range of local aerial lifts along with some bad work practices for our Death Wish series.
As the photos illustrate there are plenty of aging and primate vehicle mounted platforms in use, and standing on the mid rail appears a popular way to gain some extra height.
In one example two truck mounted ladder platforms have been set up on a busy road with very little effort made for traffic management. The operators are painting the underside of a bridge at a height of around five metres with no harnesses or lanyards and are even climbing on the platform rails in order to get a better reach. No outrigger mats have been used and one of the outriggers has been placed on soil.
In the words of our correspondent: “Oh dear!! - photographed during my recent visit to Kiev - my fatherland Ukraine still has a long way to go with truck mounts and safe work at height practices!!”
