Terex Challenger for H&S

German crane rental company H & S Autokrane of Hesse, has taken delivery of a new Terex Challenger 3160 All Terrain crane.

The new crane went to work at the salt and fertilizer plant of Kali und Salzwerke, where it proved to be ideal for getting into the tight spaces around the plant, while coping with the high salt content in the air. The unit is mostly being used to remove and install pipes and valves. With is 50 metre main boom, generous working envelope and decent capacities including with the boom horizontal it has proved an ideal machine for the application.

Herbert Schug of H&S said: “To work here, a crane actually needs to be like a balloon, really small when it pulls in, but large with a long boom when working. Moreover, it needs to be able to lift heavy loads. The Challenger 3160 crane comes the closest to fulfilling this ideal.”

“Since the telescoping action of the Challenger 3160 crane also works horizontally, it is perfectly suited to our purposes,” added crane operator Jens Hartung. It is also equipped with a runner- (searcher hook), which makes it possible to utilise the available workspace almost right up to the ceiling of the building.

The unit performs well in low headroom applications

“We recently had to hoist pipelines and steel elements up to a height of 42 metres for assembly in an existing steel structure. The approach was extremely narrow, with some passages allowing for a width of just 2.6 metres and a height of only 3.6 metres. Thanks to its compact design the Challenger 3160 was able to safely drive into position like through the ‘eye of a needle eye’, without scraping the sides. Since there were also drains passing underneath the workspace, the maximum total crane weight for the job was limited to 40 tonnes. What made it even more difficult was the fact that the presence of the drains made it necessary for part of the work to use only half of its outrigger extension but the full counterweight”.

“Without exception, the Terex cranes are very well built and withstand the aggressive environmental conditions over the long haul. That is why they’re our first choice - and this job just confirmed that once again” said Schug.
