Carillion ground all lifts In the Middle East.

A fatal accident occurred in the Middle East earlier this month, involving a self propelled boom lift, in which the bolts connecting the slew ring to the chassis, failed, causing the superstructure to topple off
and the boom to rise up and hit the overhead steel work throwing the operator to his death.

The contractor, Carillion grounded all aerial lifts on its sites in the region until they had been fully inspected and given a clean bill of health.

The ring bolts failed somehow, on this lift, throwing the operator into the steel braces overhead.


The investigation into exactly what occurred, is ongoing and no details are yet available, The contractors bulletin to its staff suggests a problem with missing ring bolts. But as of this time it is impossible to say what exactly occurred.

The boom's slew bearing broke away, causing the superstructure to topple off, it sent the basket up into the roof


Slew ring bolts should always be checked for correct torque on a regular basis.
