Seven Liebherr towers for Agrimeco

Vietnamese engineering and construction conglomerate Agrimeco has purchased seven new Liebherr tower cranes for work on the prestigious VietinBank Towers project in Hanoi - the country’s highest tower.

The cranes - three 542 HC-L 18/36 Litronic luffing jib units and four 280 EC-H 16 Litronic units - are the first new Liebherr tower cranes in Vietnam.

The cranes, which will supply the entire crane lifting duties on the project. The three luffing jib models are the first to be erected closely followed by the four 280 EC-H cranes installed by the end of this year.

The 542 HC-L is the second largest crane in Liebherr’s HC-L luffing jib range, with a maximum lift capacity of 36 tonnes and a maximum radius of 65 metres, all three are all working on the office tower. The 280 EC-H has a lift capacity of 16 tonnes and a maximum radius of 70 metres and will be used to erect the hotel/residential tower and the podium block. Agrimeco in a joint venture with Hoa Binh Construction, is responsible for the main construction works.

Located at Ciputra City between the airport and central Hanoi, VietinBank Towers is a 300,000 sq m development that will comprise two towers - one 68 storeys and the other of 48 storeys - connected by a seven-storey podium. The complex is considered one of the most technologically advanced structures to be erected in Vietnam.

The largest towers will act as the headquarters for VietinBank - one of the largest banking groups in Vietnam. The second tower will accommodate a five-star hotel, a spa and residential apartments. The podium will house a conference centre, leisure facilities, restaurants and luxury shops. The taller tower will be 363 metres high and the upper levels will be V-shaped representing the VietinBank logo. The smaller tower will also be triangular-shaped in plan rising to 280 metres. The project has been designed by London-based Foster + Partners, its first project in Vietnam.

“Vietnam has always been a very competitive market for our tower cranes, as Chinese-built cranes and second-hand units have had the price advantage and the volume of high-rise building has until recently been limited,” says Mike Tay, senior regional sales manager for tower cranes at Liebherr-Singapore Pte which arranged the purchase and delivery. “We feel that high-rise construction in Vietnam is entering a new era and we are proud to be associated with such an innovative and technologically advanced project.”

“VietinBank Towers will be the tallest structure in Vietnam,” added Le Van An, president of Agrimeco. “It also presents the most rigorous engineering demands of any high-rise structure in our country. Liebherr showed us how we could deploy these cranes to the optimum effect. Had we been using another type of crane we would not have had this productivity and we would almost certainly have had to use more than seven units.”
