31m on a 3.5 tonne chassis

Comet and Hoogweker Centrum/PowerLift have jointly unveiled the new Comet Compact 3117 Jib, a 31 metre simple specification truck mounted lift that can be driven on a regular B(E) driving licence (3.5 tonne truck and up to 3.5 tonne trailer) The reason is that the platform is technically mounted on a trailer behind a 3.5 tonne truck chassis.

The new 31m Comet 3117 Jib can be driven on a 3.5 tonne B licence

The trailer frame/chassis runs along the top of the normal truck chassis to the third axle, so that the platform is truly mounted on a trailer – albeit a slightly unconventional one, which the partners say can be practically removed in around 10 minutes, leaving the bare two axle chassis.

The platform’s all up weight is 6,850kg, the boom configuration – a dual sigma type riser, three section telescopic boom and jib, offers 17 metres of outreach with a 250kg platform capacity through 360 degrees. Continuous slew. Controls are full hydraulic, and the main hydraulic system is relatively low pressure at 25bar.

It also offers a bi-energy Electric/Diesel power pack, beam and jack (H) type outriggers, 180 degrees platform rotation and is mounted on a 3.5 tonne Iveco chassis. We also understand that it comes at a fairly attractive price – at least when compared to a high tech 29 metre 3.5 tonne truck mount or a regular 31 metre model

Vertikal Comment

How well this takes off depends on the fine detail of the vehicle driving licence regime in each country and how rental companies look on it. Compared to the thoroughbred 27 metre plus German built 3.5 tonners this is a bit of a cart horse. But in the rental game that is no bad thing.

It is not the first platform using this concept, Hoogwerker Centrum built similar models with Oil&Steel using its 27 metre superstructures See Oil&Steel launch 27m truck mount at Bauma and there are good few on the road in the Netherlands and Germany, so the concept is proven and tested. This version however looks far more balanced and practical, and it offers an additional four metres of working height of course.

This will be an interesting one to watch.
