A bridge too low

Train services between Bede and South Shields were disrupted for more than an hour after the platform collided with the bridge at 8.10am this morning. The station approach road was also closed to traffic.

Police thought the driver of the hire vehicle was unfamiliar with the roads and bridges in the area. The driver, a man in his 50s, was unhurt and later provided a negative breath specimen.
The force of the collision had broken the rear axle of the vehicle.
