Mammoet takes first Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1

Dutch international heavy lift and transport group Mammoet has taken delivery of the first production version of the 700 tonne Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1.

The new crane, one of several LTM 1650’s order by Mammoet, left the Liebherr plant in Ehingen last week, after all the prototype tests were successfully concluded, clearing the way for deliveries of the crane to begin. Unveiled at Bauma last April and originally a 650 tonner, the crane was designed to replace the highly successful 500 tonne LTM 1500-8.1.

The LTM 1650-8.1 can be supplied with two telescopic boom lengths of 54 metres and 80 metres to cope with variable road configurations and preferences. A 90 metre luffing jib is also available, while the VarioBase variable outrigger system is standard. Capacities are said to be between 15 and 20 percent better than the old 1500-8.1

Mammoet’s chief operating officer Jan Kleijn said: “We are delighted to take delivery of the first ever LTM 1650-8.1 from Liebherr. The performance, mobility and economy of this new crane model will enrich our fleet, giving Mammoet the flexibility to gradually replace our 500 and 700 tonners with this new eight axle Liebherr crane. The crane handover is also a sign of the strong, long term relationship between our two companies, which are leaders in their respective industries.”

Liebherr Ehingen sales director Christoph Kleiner added: “Thank you very much for the trust you have shown in us, confirming that, in the form of the LTM 1650-8.1, we have designed a worthy successor to the LTM 1500-8.1. We also appreciate feedback from crane operations and the advice that we received from Mammoet to enable us to extract the maximum from eight axles. Peter van Oostrom, director global projects and assets for Mammoet said: “Whilst our original desire was to gradually replace our LTM 1500-8.1 cranes, we are delighted that Liebherr has managed to extract so much performance from the LTM 1650-8.1 that we can also use it to replace 700 tonne class machines. The main highlights of the new crane include the simple, fast setup and dismantling of the rear support box. It also has standard ballast slabs, which are compatible with other Liebherr cranes, ranging from 350 to 1,200 tonne models. That increases the flexibility of our fleet and is extremely cost-efficient.”
