Grove unveils new ATs

Grove has unveiled two new five axle long boomed All Terrain cranes at a series of customer events held at its Wilhelmshaven facility in Germany. The first is the new 120 tonne GMK5120L, and the other the 150 tonne GMK5150XL, the third 150 tonner in the company's All Terrain line up.

Details on the GMK5120L are somewhat limited, however it features a new seven section 66 metre main boom and boasts what the manufacturer describes as a 'class leading' range of onboard counterweight options to achieve 10, 12 or 16.5 tonne axle loads. The crane's overall length on the road is 14.19 metres with an overall width of 2.75 metres.

The GMK5150XL offers a seven section 68.7 metre boom and joins the GMK5150 and GMK5150L which feature 51.8 and 60 metre main booms respectively. It boasts a capacity of 8.1 tonnes when fully extended, 9.4 tonnes at 66 metres and 12.7 tonnes with 60 metres. This is probably the longest boom on a crane under 200 tonnes, but in spite of the long boom the company claims that the new model's load charts are 'best in class'.

The 5150XL can carry up to 10.2 tonnes of counterweight within 12 tonne axle loadings and up to 30.9 tonnes where 16.5 tonne axle loads are possible. The new model shares much of its componentry with the shorter boomed 150 tonne models, as well as the new 120, including counterweight sections. The new cranes incorporate the Grove MAXbase variable outrigger setup and its latest generation carrier cab – see: Grove upgrades cabs.

Visitors to the event also got the chance to finally see the 400 tonne GMK6400-1 ‘in the iron’ following its virtual launch at Conexpo in March 2020.

The upgraded model now features the Manitowoc Crane Control System (CCS) and an improved hydraulic system that is said to offers faster operating speeds and smoother operation. The addition of the company’s variable outrigger positioning has also improved main boom capacities, while all Grove All Terrain cranes can now use HVO diesel.

Andreas Cremer, vice president product management of mobile cranes, said: “These new Grove cranes deliver a level of performance that was not previously thought possible from cranes in this class, and we can’t wait to get the first orders to our customers. It was wonderful to finally be able to welcome so many valued customers and friends back to Wilhelmshaven, show them these exciting new cranes and hear such positive feedback – especially when our ‘Voice of the Customer’ programme plays such an important role in how we design our cranes.”
