Chippindale celebrates 75 years

UK rental company Chippindale Hire & Sales celebrates its 75th anniversary today.

Founded in 1949 by Wilfred Chippindale with £100 of savings, the company began by selling concrete and scaffold from Chippindale’s home in Leeds. In 1955, Wilfred’s two sons - Brian and Gordon - became involved in the business and eventually Chippindales grandsons - Nigel and Peter - took the reins in the 1980’s. They still oversee the company today, along with Paul Blake who joined in March earlier this year making a three man leadership team.

In 1972, the company was one of the first to equip its fleet with radio phones and 10 years later the company went electronic and installed computers throughout which was a bold move at the time.

Peter Chippindale said: “There have been many changes to the industry and the company over the years, but the family service values and ethos we were built on are still core to our business.”

"We will be celebrating our Diamond Anniversary year in style with some exciting plans for the future in place as we start a new chapter in our history. April will see a large company wide celebration, especially as many of the team have been with the company for decades, including some staff with over 30 years’ service. We would like to thank all our past and present employees for their service.”

Paul Blake said: “Chippindale Hire & Sales ethos, based on the foundations laid by Wilfred 75 years ago, is to offer customers quality equipment and exceptional service, always delivered with an emphasis on reliability and safety. That hasn’t changed and we are fit and ready for the coming decades ahead!”

“Our commitment to sustainability and innovation is evident in our investments in full emissions compliance for our fleet, an expanded nationwide attachments division and the continuous enhancement of Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality policies. We are aiming for ISO 45001 accreditation at all depots within the next 12 months.”

Today the company is part of the AER rent group and operates from nine depots across the north of the UK. It runs an extensive fleet of general construction and landscaping equipment, but also operates a fleet of fixed frame telehandlers up to 17 metres along with a few platforms, including trailer lifts. Revenues for the year to the end of April 2023 were £25.6 million with a pre-tax profit of £3.6 million.
