Offshore knuckles for Norway

Norwegian shipping company Sea1 Offshore has ordered two 250 tonne Huisman knuckle boom cranes for an offshore energy support vessel.

The units will be installed on a ST-245 vessel and are each capable of lifting 250 tonne with a maximum reach of 36 metres. They will feature an active heave compensated deepwater main hoist and auxiliary hoist and main hoist block catcher.

The cranes will also be equipped with Huisman’s active heave compensation system which integrates the crane’s electric configuration with the vessel’s DC grid, enabling interaction with the vessel’s electrical energy storage system. The design aims to reduce the energy consumption of lifting operations. This is Huisman’s fourth contract this year following the upgrade of its knuckle boom cranes.

Product director for cranes Cees van Veluw said: “With the current surge in newbuilds in the OSV sector, we are witnessing growing demand for high quality equipment with low energy consumption. Huisman’s active heave compensation solutions address these requirements and include our patented technology for seamless interaction with the vessel’s electrical energy storage system. We are pleased with the confidence both Sea1 Offshore and Cosco Qidong Offshore have shown in Huisman for the delivery of these cranes.”

Established in the Netherlands in 1929, Huisman began as a steel construction company. Over time, it transformed into heavy lift and offshore equipment design and manufacture. In the 1960s, the company shifted its focus to developing crane and lifting solutions for offshore and heavy lifting purposes. Today, the company employs over 2,500 worldwide.
