125t Konecranes for Sicily

Italian steel logistics company Duferco Terminal Mediterraneo (DTM) has taken delivery of a 125 tonne ‘Generation 6’ Konecranes/Gottwald ESP.6 mobile harbour crane for its Giammoro terminal in Sicily.

The crane can handle its maximum capacity at a radius of up to 49 metres at a height of 18 metres. The crane features a Konecranes hybrid drive, which comprises a Stage V diesel paired with an ultra-capacitor that can be recharged by energy recovered from lowering and braking motions.

The crane is now installed at the Giammoro terminal where the company has spent €95 million on expanding and refurbishing the area - including an adjacent steel factory - to reduce emissions. It is located on a newly developed pier connecting an industrial area where part of the commercial traffic will be moved from the urban port.

Terminal director Maurizio Miduri said: “This is a significant step forward in efficiently developing our Giammoro operations. The ESP.6 crane enables us to deliver on our productivity goals, while also enhancing environmental sustainability. DTM aims to set a benchmark for sustainable logistics operations that supports Italy’s industrial growth.”

Konecranes’ regional sales manager Tommaso Chindemi added: “Our team did a great job to meet the ZES timeline, demonstrating Konecranes’ commitment to meeting special customer needs. Duferco is a very important logistics player in Italy and shares our focus on enabling sustainable operations with eco efficient lifting equipment.”
