Wolffs for Saudi stadium

German tower crane manufacturer Wolffkran will provide 21 tower cranes for the new 46,979 seat Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium in the new Qiddiya leisure area of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, one of the venues for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The contract announcementwas held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh, with representatives from Wolffkran and Qiddiya Investment Company in attendance. The stadium forms part of the Qiddiya giga-project and Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy.

The 21 tower cranes comprise eight 60 tonne Wolff 1250B and nine 42 tonne 630B luffing jib models, plus four flat top models - three 16 tonne 7534.16 Clear, and one 20 tonne 8038.20 Clear. Further units may be added as the project develops. All cranes will be supplied, installed, maintained and operated by Wolffkran teams with 180 Wolffkran personnel working on site during the project's peak phase.
A Wolffkran 1250B luffer

One 1250B and two 630Bs will reach freestanding heights of over 100 metres, which would make them the tallest freestanding tower cranes in Saudi Arabia.

To meet the site's height and wind resistance requirements, operating in D50 wind conditions, Wolffkran has developed a 3.3 metre wide by six metres long tower section that it has named the Wolff XT 33.

Wolffkran owner and board member Peter Schiefer said: "This engineering achievement underscores Wolffkran's ability and willingness to go the extra mile: developing new components when standard solutions are not enough. It reflects our focus on solving technical challenges through practical and innovative engineering solutions, as also demonstrated in other complex high altitude projects such as the Grimsel project in the Swiss Alps."

Wolffkran Equipment Saudi Arabia's managing director Tariq Al-Sawaie added: "Wolffkran's extensive experience with complex large scale projects, combined with in-house engineering expertise and an established turnkey approach, were key factors in winning the contract. With the concept for the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium Wolffkran is not only lifting components but also setting new standards in large-scale construction projects."
