Belgian heavy lift specialist Sarens has deployed a 600 tonne Terex Demag CC 2800-1 crawler crane for the construction of a new fertiliser plant in Zambia. The crane has been on site since November 2024, handling lifts up to 250 tonnes and components up to 80 metres in length.
The CC 2800-1 was initially configured with an 84 metre S7 main boom and 300 tonnes of superlift ballast, before being reconfigured with a 108 metre main boom. The crane will be further modified to include an 84 metre main boom with a 54 metre luffing jib for upcoming phases.

Working alongside a 250 tonne Sany crawler crane, the CC 2800-1 has been handling a variety of components including compressors, tanks, columns, furnaces, hoppers, drums, filter presses and modules. The two cranes have performed tandem lifts requiring coordinated slewing and crawling movements.
The project has required careful planning due to confined spaces, tight access roads, long periods of rainfall and challenging terrain. Communication protocols were established to coordinate between English and Chinese speaking teams on site.
