A crane operator died on Tuesday while reportedly working on a crane on a construction site just south of the Colorado Springs airport in Colorado.
It seems that the man, said to be in his late 40s, was trapped or pulled into the machinery and was trapped. When the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived on the scene, he was already dead. It then took the department’s heavy rescue team almost four hours to free him.
The scene on Tuesday evening
OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration - is investigating the incident at the Forge at Peak Innovation Park, where the
Opus is the main contractor on the project. It has issued a brief statement that said: “Opus is deeply saddened that a contracted construction worker died today following an accident at our jobsite in Colorado Springs. Our thoughts and prayers are with the worker and their family. Safety is a top priority at Opus, and we are cooperating fully with all investigating authorities.”
It seems, but we cannot confirm that the incident occurred on a 300 ton/272 tonne Link Belt 348 lattice crawler crane. There is still much we do not know about this incident, and although it has been widely reported with all manner of inaccuracies, we are not even 100 percent certain it was a crane and not an aerial work platform - 98 percent yes, but we cannot yet be certain. We are hoping to hear back from a second local contact shortly.
