State of the art delivery truck

Wakefield, UK, based Horizon Platform took delivery of its first Heavy Goods delivery Vehicle last week, a Euro 5 Volvo with Shawtrack body.

Given the teams experience at previous companies and the fact that it is a small company, the selection of the new vehicle was probably researched and purchased with far more care than usual.

Horizon’s managing director Ben Hirst shares the thought processes and rational behind the selection process.

Horizon's new Volvo truck

“We have been running a Shaw Hire six wheel Renault for the past six months ‘testing the waters’ to gauge whether the company was ready to commit to purchasing its first HGV. Whilst 2009 hasn’t been without its challenges - given the economic environment, the rental truck has more than paid for itself and encouraged us to buy.”

“The new truck was ordered four months ago having taken the decision to purchase a Volvo FM440 accompanied by the Shawtrack body. With carrying capacity and fuel efficiency in mind, we have opted for the eight wheel 32 tonne chassis with the 440 horse power engine driving the state of art the Volvo i-shift gearbox. To aid manoeuvrability on tighter sites we have added the rear wheel steer option, this also cuts down on tyre wear, contributing to reduced running costs.”

“With the Euro 5 specification, we will now enjoy reduced Road Fund Licence charges and the ability to deliver into city centre areas.”

“We have added a few creature comforts too, because a relaxed and comfortable driver is a safer driver. The cab has a leather steering wheel, along with features such as climate control, CD player, electric windows and door locks. Satellite navigation equipment has also been added to easily locate delivery points.”

“With regards to the body my working relationship with Shawtrack stems back to my previous job at Uplift Platforms. I have always found their truck bodies to be reliable and hard wearing, but equally important, they are slightly lighter than their competitors’ meaning an increased payload. This new vehicle has a carry capacity of well over 18,000kg.”

“The whole package has been provided by Crossroads Truck and Van in Leeds. Their expert advice, attention to detail and customer care has so far been outstanding. I now look forward to a lengthy working partnership with this new supplier.”
