IMO opens plant in USA

German based slew ring and rotary joint manufacturer IMO has established a new company, IMO USA Corp and setting up a 3,700 square metres/40,000 sqft production facility in Summerville, South Carolina, around 40 km northwest of the port of Charleston.

The new plant will produce slew rings and rotary actuators for the wind power industry as well as cranes and shipyards. Production is scheduled to begin in July
with a potential to employ around 190, the company is investing $47 million investment in the project.

Rüdiger Unverzagt chief executive of IMO USA said: “This is a milestone in our company history and our vision of a subsidiary in the United States has come true. Charleston’s strong port coupled with its strengthening profile in alternative energy gave us complete confidence in our decision to come here.”

This is the first IMO facility out side of its home town of Gremsdorf, near Nuremberg, Germany. The company was founded in 1988 to build slew rings and has frequently been among the fastest growing companies in Bavaria, and among the 200 fastest growing European businesses.
