Self-erector overturns

A self-erecting tower crane tipped over in Hahnwald, just outside of Cologne, German yesterday morning coming to rest on a residential house.

The crane was reportedly lifting a pallet of bricks or blocks on a neighbouring property when it tipped over. Although the family was in the house at the time there were no injuries and the damage to the building appears minimal.

According to the rescue services the crane is currently in a stable position with its jib at a 45 degree angle on the edge of the roof. Cologne based crane rental company Colonia will attempt to recover the crane but at this time it is unknown whether it will need to be dismantled first. The cause of the incident is still not known.

Lets see, the obvious fault is that the counterweights were not bolted together, but it was more likely this was caused by either the limit switches were not set correctly or they were trying to lift a load not directly under the trolley. They are known as Self Erecting Tower Cranes (SETC).
