Much technology few new models

The ARA opened today/yesterday in Anaheim California for the first time on the west coast since 2003. While there is a huge amount of new technology, ideas, options, attachments and developments, there are few completely new models on display.

Some of this is down to some models - such as JLG's lithium powered articulated booms - being reserved for a Bauma unveiling in April, and some because the technology development is actually seen as more important at the moment and the speed of change so rapid that manufacturers are naturally focused on this area of development.

The companies that probably had the most to say on new machine launches were:

Skyjack, with its new big RT scissor lift range, with a high capacity of 1,250kg, 33ft SJ9233RT plus 43, 53 and 63ft models, and an updated 40ft SJIII 4740 now simply renamed SJ4740.

The other new machine, was the 40ft SJ4740 slab electric scissor lift, with improved scissor stack, new controller, improved pothole protection system, updated Elevate telematics and full compliance with new ANSI standard

Skyjack also talked about autonomous operation for the future and demonstrated a machine doing a self pre-use check

Genie with its new S45XC model, along with its new 13ft electric drive GS1330m - M for Micro. And a lithium ion battery option for its 19 to 40ft slab scissor lifts, the launch of its Lift Connect advanced telematics and numerous other accessories.

JLG launched its two new slab scissor lifts in its R rental series, the 26ft R2632R and 32ft 3246R

What almost every major exhibitor did have was new technology, including apps that allow you to remotely operate the travel functions of a scissor lift - for example while loading - with your mobile phone at a distance of up to 10 metres, to advanced telematics which is becoming standard equipment. Skyjack demonstrated an autonomous scissor lift, the company believes that by 2023 this will be a reality, with machines able to do a self-test each day moving steering and lifting also scanning its components and then storing the resulting data in the system. Such a machine might then even load itself onto a truck with other units in an order ready for delivery.
