A four axle All Terrain crane became jammed between two buildings yesterday in Cockermouth, in the English Lake District

The crane an unmarked Terex had driven down a street with a very narrow single lane junction between two old buildings. The driver was unable to make the turn into the main road, without the crane’s rear end making contact with the building to his right.

In spite of a good deal of manoeuvring the crane pulled several large blocks from the corner of the house. The police arrived on the scene and evacuated the building as a precaution.

A statement from the police said: “Unfortunately Kirkgate, Cockermouth is going to be closed to traffic until further notice due to a collision this evening, which has left the corner building with substantial structural damage. Once this has been assessed and made safe, the road will reopen.”

“The driver of the vehicle has been identified, spoken to and reported for driving without due care and attention. Officers would like to thank members of the public and businesses for their understanding and assistance whilst emergency services dealt with the situation.”

This may be a silly comment, but why didn't the driver/operator slow down, watch his mirrors and (heaven forbid) stop and get out and look..........?

What happened to the movement orders for going down that narrow road, surely the route would have picked up the width from the Council.

Between the length, width, lack of rear visibility and tail swing, you can have all the due care and still hit something if you don't have someone to watch your back... literally as in this. And if you're new to a machine you might not even know how to put it in independent rear steer instead of the normal on<Sonethingmph off>somethingmph "road" mode.

That's the rear swinging out further under rear counterterrorism.... steer... at low speed (ignore what autocorrect did to counter my correct word lol) which in roadmode is automatic, no immediate, and easy to catch you out (my dad, drove for decades, used to smaller machines not having that and knocked the back cab of a 45t tadano off because that had it, steered it into a neighbouring cranes fly jib that in early hours basically invisible.
