Lucky escape for crane operator

A crawler crane operator had a lucky escape this morning after a pile driving rig broke free from the boom of his crane and smashed into the cab.

The 24 metre piling mast broke away from the top of the boom and struck the cab cab, before landing in an access road at the site near the station in Haverhill near Boston, Massachussets.

The crane. A Manitowoc crawler, was apparently lifting a generator when the mast support appears to have given way.

The site is parking garage being built by the Merrimack Valley Regional Transportation Authority. The authorities have said that the road has been closed and will probably remain so now until the pile driving has been completed.
