Beam falls on boom lift

Three people were injured yesterday after a steel beam fell onto a boom lift on a science park site on the Yale university campus in New Haven Connecticut.

The booms were working on the steelwork on the site of the old Winchester rifle building, which is being converted into a chiller plant to cool other buildings on the science park. The contractor is Shawmut Construction.

The two people in the platform were wearing harnesses and remained in the basket but suffered injuries from the falling beam. One man was pinned under the beam and is in critical condition as is a man who was in the platform. A Woman who was also in the platform also sustained less serious injuries.

A team from Connecticut Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.

Tom Goemaat, chief executive of Shawmut Design and Construction, issued the following statement: “Our primary concern right now is for the well-being of the workers involved in today’s incident. Our thoughts are with them and their families. Job site safety is always our top construction priority, and we will cooperate fully with OSHA and local authorities in reviewing this very serious matter.”

Upadate

Since the accident one of the injured me, Robert Adrian has died while the female worker has been released form hospital. a the third man remains in critical condition while we understand that a fourth person was also injured in the incident and is in serious condition.
