Huisman installs 5,000tm crane

Dutch-based lifting, drilling and subsea solutions specialist Huisman has installed the world’s largest (5,000 tonne/metre) offshore mast crane onboard the vessel the Seven Borealis.

The crane is considered to be the heaviest and logistically most complex produced by Huisman to date. After final load testing, the vessel will depart for the Huisman production facility in Schiedam where the installation will be completed.

Both the transport and installation of the crane were performed by Huisman. Transport from the Huisman production facility in Zhangzhou, China to the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore was carried out by BigLift’s ‘Happy Buccaneer’, a heavy lift cargo vessel with first generation (1984) Huisman mast cranes.

At Sembawang Shipyard the crane was installed onboard the Seven Borealis in four days, a lift of approximately 1,000 tonnes each day. The four crane pieces were installed in the sequence - mast base, slewing section, boom and mast. The reeving and commissioning of the crane is currently being carried out.

As well as the two 2,500 tonne metre main hoisting blocks, the crane has a 1,200 tonne metre auxiliary hoist which is equipped with a heave compensator and is capable of storing up to 6,000 metres of 109mm diamter hoisting cable.

The tip of the fly jib has an additional 110 tonne metre auxiliary hoist. The installed electro motor power is approximately 15MW. Huisman has also started the fabrication of a similar mast crane with a slewing lift capacity of 4,000 tonne metres which is planned for delivery in 2012.
