A new platform for wind turbine blade maintenance

The Spider division of SafeWorks has launched a modular 360 degree suspended platform for wind turbine blade access, that can also be configured for simple blade inspection and main tower access needs.

The platforms modular design and light weight makes it easy to transport to site and to assemble once in position.

Once assembled and its two hoist ropes connected to the top of the hub area the 360 degree platform sits on a support or stabilisation frame to which the hoist motors are attached. The frame has runners with travel up the main turbine tower, helping to stabilise the platform. The platform can be moved horizontally on the frame with a simple hand winch, so that it can be kept centres on the vertical blade.

The entire system is available for purchase or rent from Spider’s 25 locations in the Americas, which also provide after sales support.

John Sotiroff vice president of Spider sales & distribution said: “Our blade contractor customers look to this platform as a no-brainer for their ‘uptower’ work as it is easily configurable for a range of jobs, has 20 years of field-tested performance and is simple to operate, own and source from a trusted supplier. The modular, simple design of the platform eliminates the need to mobilise expensive ground-based solutions.”

Spider has produced an animated video to show how the 360 degree platform works. To view it simply click here

This looks like a neat and inexpensive solution for blade cleaning and maintenance, particularly for those who are comfortable and familiar with using suspended platforms.

It won’t be a solution that appeals to everyone though, or for one that suits every eventuality, but it does add to the practical solutions available for such work and as such will be welcomed by many wind farm operators.
