University Death Wish

Spotted yesterday by a reader in Glasgow, a spider crane and two men on a scaffold tower clearly with a Death Wish.

The scene was played out at a Strathclyde University building on Cathedral Street in Glasgow City Centre.

The tower is set up on the steps to the building and looks to be well levelled, it has at least one outrigger set more to counter the side stresses that the two men on the platform are placing on it than to provide normal stability.

A combined crane and access Death Wish

The platform has no guardrails and no toe-boards but that is the least of the two men’s worries. Form their position on the open fronted platform they are pulling on a large piece of glass to bring it in under the canopy. In doing so they are relying on their shoe grip to fight gravity and the one outrigger to stop the tower going over.

One assumes that they got away with it? This could so easily have ended up a sad mess. At least they used some tape to keep the public out.

A closer look

Our photographer says that the contractor had been previously contacted to have the men using the tower PASMA trained but not taken up the suggestion.
