African crane order for Kalmar
Cargotec has received what it describes as ‘a breakthrough order’ for ship-to-shore cranes from the Bollore group of France, through its wholly-owned Unicaf subsidiary.
The initial contract is for four Kalmar ship-to-shore cranes to be delivered in the third quarter of 2012 to various ports in West Africa. The contract also includes an option for four more units.
This is the first ever order for Kalmar ship-to-shore cranes for West African ports. The 60 tonne single box boom type cranes will have an outreach of 47 metres with a 30.5 metre rail span and fitted with Bromma twin-lift spreaders. The new cranes will be used to provide specialised ship-to-shore gantry crane capacity in ports where handling is currently carried out by mobile cranes or the ship's own equipment, and on green field terminals.

Bollore is one of the largest container terminal operators in Africa with a network of 13 terminals and market leader in West Africa. The company is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to develop both existing and new terminals over the next few years, in order to meet the needs of the fast-growing economies in West Africa, including landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali.
Ismo Matinlauri, Cargotec’s senior vice president, port cranes said: "Receiving this landmark contract from Bollore allies us with one of the most respected names in the African logistics sector. The contract has been secured after Cargotec was able to demonstrate both the quality of its equipment and that the capability was available to meet a relatively short lead time to delivery. We believe this will be the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship between Cargotec and Bollore group."
