Liebherr to expand use of carbon fibre technology

Liebherr is to start tests on expanding the use of carbon fibre technology (CFK) in a wider range of its products. The company is currently using the technology on pendant straps fitted to its HS 895 HD duty cycle crawler crane and is an option on its LR 1300 crawler crane.

The material offers high strength and low weight - up to three times lighter and offering a higher tensile strength for the same steel cross section. When used as pendant straps, this allows the crane to self-erect longer boom combinations allowing greater heights and working radii. In addition, Liebherr says the crane offers improved capacities, particularly at long radii. Another advantage is easier handling during crane assembly.
